are Saddened by the
Recent Passing of the
Diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic cancer in November 2009, she was determined to beat this deadly disease. She battled for close to 20 months, but as most know, pancreatic cancer is relentless in fighting back. Marlene's creative passions for "Horses and Art,” coupled with her deep love for her family and friends, gave her the inner spirit and strength to continually beat back the cancer. She died on May 31st, 2011. She is deeply missed by all of her family and friends. Marlene Newman is survived by her two sons, Jason & Philip, and her husband, Sheldon. Marlene was the originator of a protective cover for horses worn under blankets that prevented chafing. She received a U.S. Methods Patent in 1990 for her unique design and use of stretchable fabrics. Since the Wundercover® was introduced in 1989, the company has sold many thousands all over the world. Her design of the Wundercover® and other original horse clothing have been worn by horses of Gold Medal Olympics riders, dressage champions and open jumping champions, as well as the many thousands of horse owners of ponies and horses of all breeds and sizes from around the world. Marlene Newman was a graduate of Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, PA in 1968. Prior, to her invention of the W’undercover® and the founding of Wunderwear®, Marlene was most known for her paintings, photography, writings and sculptures, as well as being an accomplished horse woman in Chester Springs, PA. Some of her sculptures included a 10 foot high (Jewish) ark, made of aluminum and wood, for Temple Brith Achim, a new synagogue (1971), in King of Prussia, PA. She was also commissioned by Wild Horse Annie and the WHOA (Wild Horse Organized Assistance) Foundation, to produce a limited edition set of bronzes to help save the Mustang. This was cast at the Tallix foundry in Peekskill, NY and the edition was sold out very quickly. In 1976, Marlene was selected by the White House to sculpt a bronze 'bas-relief',as a state gift for the Prime Minister of Ireland, Liam Cosgrave. She designed a bas-relief of a fox hunt scene, entitled "Gone-Away," cast in bronze (Tallix Foundry) and set in a wooden table. State department presentations were made at the Blair House. Marlene was invited to the White House on St. Patrick’s day, 1976, as a guest of President Ford and First Lady Betty Ford, where she was introduced to the Prime Minister and his wife, as well as the other dignitaries, as the outstanding woman artist/sculptor of this state gift. As horse owner and rider, Marlene saw firsthand that horses had severe chafing problems when wearing heavy blankets or sheets. She was determined to find a solution to this problem. After a year and half of designs and redesigns, she settled on the design known as the W'undercover®. Marlene Newman became the sole originator/inventor of an undergarment garment to protect horse’s shoulder, when wearing any top cover, like a blanket or heavy sheet. Many competitors were to follow. And, she always said that, "she was flattered by the later products that appeared on the market trying to solve the same problems." However, no product every surpassed a W'undercover™ in quality, effectiveness and durability. Marlene took pride that the W'undercover® was "Made in the USA" with the highest quality of workmanship and the highest quality Lycra® fabrics and mesh." We thank all of you, from around the world, who have purchased W'undercovers®. Your letters and emails constantly told us how impressed you were with W'undercover®'s ability to prevent chafing of your horse coat. Again, from all of us, Thank You. Finally, Wunderwear®, as a privately held company, does not plan to manufacture any more Wundercovers®. We have very few remaining in stock, less than 90. In remembrance of her life, beginning on October 10th of this year, one month before her birthday, we began including something special with every new order. In every W'undercover® package that we ship, we will include the original color brochure announcing W'undercover® (1989), a very beautiful, unpublished "Poem" written by Marlene in tribute to her horse Summerbrook, and the first newsletter from the Company, dated 1994, plus some other one-of-a-kind W'undercover® items. All Wundercovers® will sell for $100.00 (not including S&H). For each sale, a donation of $20.00 will be made to the American Cancer Society in Marlene's name. This special commemoration will last until all W'undercovers® are sold out. Again, thank you for the past 21 years in support of Wunderwear® and the original "W'undercover®" . _________________________________________
